A young family in the vibrant neighborhood of Jamaica Plain approached us to help them redesign parts of their first floor to accommodate a new powder room and create a connection to their deck.

The design process was involved as we tested out various layouts and landed on a design where a banquette created the experience they were looking for. The powder room was tucked away while allowing us to create an 8’ opening between the kitchen and dining. We removed a series of doors to open the floor plan and enable a visual and physical connection between the spaces. We also added a pair of glass sliding doors to the deck directly from the dining room that was missing previously.

The much needed storage design evolved from the need for a banquette by creating a central focal point in the dining room that was missing when we demolished a pantry and elongated the room. By flanking the built-ins we were able to open up the space in addition to refurbishing the fireplace and adding a stone surround and hearth.
